Physical Examinations Q&A
Why are physical exams important?
Having regular physical exams plays a critical role in helping Dr. Papas identify medical conditions in their earliest stages when they're most easily treated. It also provides Dr. Papas with an opportunity to identify risk factors for serious conditions and diseases like high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes so he can help you take specific actions to avoid developing those diseases. Plus, a physical exam provides an ongoing record of your health, making it easier for the doctor to identify changes that could indicate a developing problem and helping him provide proactive, preventive care for better overall health. And of course, an exam provides you with the opportunity to discuss any medical concerns you may have, especially as you get older.
What is involved in a physical?
A physical exam begins with a comprehensive medical history so you can provide information about your health and the health history of close family members. Your history will help Dr. Papas determine if you may be at increased risk for certain medical problems like heart disease or diabetes. During the actual exam, your blood pressure and weight will be recorded and Dr. Papas will perform evaluations of your heart and lungs, gently palpate your belly, check your reflexes and perform other evaluations based on your age and other factors. He may also order lab work like blood tests or urinalysis to provide a more comprehensive picture of your overall health. At the end of your exam, he'll discuss his findings and offer guidance with regard to medical treatments or lifestyle changes to help keep you healthy.
How often do I need to have a physical?
Ideally, you should have a physical exam every year to monitor for health issues that can develop as you get older.
