Headaches / Back Pain Q&A

What causes headaches?

Headaches are one of the most common medical issues experienced by people in the U.S. They can be caused by a host of issues, and a physical exam including a detailed review of symptoms and when they occur is an important part in understanding the underlying causes. Some headaches can be caused by chronic stress or sleep disorders; others may be caused by dental issues like tempomandibular joint disorder. Many headaches are caused by neck and back issues that can result from poor posture or other habits that cause strain. Sometimes, headaches can be caused by other medical issues, like vision problems, vascular issues or tumors.

What causes back pain?

Back pain can arise from trauma from accidents or injuries related to sports or occupation, poor posture that causes excessive strain on muscles and other soft tissues, or spine or disc problems like arthritis, spinal stenosis or herniated discs. In some cases, back pain can cause pain to develop in other areas, a condition called referred pain. As a skilled physician with many years of experience, Dr. Papas has helped patients understand the causes of their back pain and overcome many types of back pain issues.

How are headaches and back pain treated?

When an underlying cause can be determined, treatment will focus on addressing that cause to reduce or eliminate pain. Many headaches and back pain issues can be successfully treated with conservative approaches including oral pain relievers or anti-inflammatory medicines, application of hot and cold compresses, gentle stretching or physical therapy to relieve sore muscles, improved posture or other changes in habits to relieve stress on muscles and other soft tissues, or injections of steroids or anesthetics in the space near the spine called the epidural space. Dr. Papas may order x-rays or CT scans to ensure you get the most appropriate care.
